As we draw this year to a close, we look back on a wealth of completed projects. From today, we would like to introduce you to the children who inspire us, through a series titled: Success Stories. These are the journeys of every child at our Centre — from our very first meeting to where they stand today.
Artem: Our “Tyomych”
When Artem first arrived at the Adaptation Centre for Adolescents with Disabilities, he took a stance of resolute defiance.
His introduction to the group began on the sofa, where he sat pushing away everything offered to him: toys, creative materials, and even the simplest attempts by our educators to sit nearby. Artem is non-verbal, and this silent but active rejection created a wall between him and the world. He was a young man who had no desire to interact.
Armed with patience, faith, and expertise in alternative communication, our team accepted the challenge. Step by step, using sensory materials that sparked even the slightest interest and elements of play, our staff managed to transform his withdrawal into engagement.
From Resistance to Leadership
Today, Artem doesn’t just sit at the table with everyone else, completing complex tasks that require fine motor skills and focus — he is active and communicative.
Though his communication remains wordless, it is now filled with clear cues: a direct gaze, an open expression of joy, and vocal sounds. “Tyoma” now oversees the processes at the Centre like a true site foreman, often accompanied by a joyful round of applause.
Artem now gathers his things for the Centre with genuine excitement; it has become a place where he truly wants to be. He even brings his own snacks independently. The boy who once pushed everything away now points confidently to the materials he needs.
Artem’s story is a vivid testament to how the perseverance of educators and an unwavering belief in a child’s potential can turn passive refusal into active participation and a profound, wordless connection.
We continue this path together. ❤️
The event (specify) was organised by NGO «Inclusion without Limits», funded by the UK Government under the SPIRIT project, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Policy, Family and Unity of Ukraine, the Fund for Social Protection of Persons with Disabilities, and UNICEF Ukraine, with administration by ISAR Ednannia.
